Pumps for carbon dioxide (CO2)

A wide range of applications for carbon dioxide (CO2)

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colourless, odourless gas that plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle and is used in numerous industrial applications. For example, CO2 is used in the chemical industry as a raw material for the production of methanol, urea, organic acids and other chemical products. Furthermore, CO2 is used in the food industry, for instance in beverages, to inhibit the growth of microorganisms or for decaffeination.

Thanks to its excellent thermodynamic properties, CO2 is also used as a refrigerant in industry, commerce and automotive engineering. At the same time, the avoidance, reuse, storage and transport of CO2 are becoming increasingly important within the framework of Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) concepts.

Interesting facts about CO2

Physical properties of CO2

  • Sublimation point: –78.5 °C at 1 bar
  • Critical point: 31.1 °C at 73.8 bar
  • In industrial applications, CO₂ is used in both its liquid and supercritical states.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

In Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), captured CO2 is liquefied after processing, stored temporarily and prepared for transport. This requires pumping solutions that ensure leak-free and reliable operation even at low temperatures, high vapour pressures and high pump capacities.
